What should one look for in a qualified wellness coach?

What should one look for in a qualified wellness coach?

Look, I get it. Finding a wellness coach these days feels like trying to pick the right avocado at the supermarket. They all look good from the outside but… you know how that goes.

So here’s what I’ve learned after years in this space (and yeah, making my share of mistakes along the way).

## **First Things First – They Gotta Walk the Walk**

You ever meet someone who tells you all about healthy living while they’re downing their third energy drink of the day? Yeah, red flag.

A real wellness coach? They’re living it. Not perfectly – nobody’s perfect – but they’re genuinely practicing what they preach. When you meet with them, you can *feel* it. They’ve got that energy, that glow, that… I dunno, that SOMETHING that makes you think “okay, whatever they’re doing, I want some of that.”

## **Credentials Matter (But They’re Not Everything)**

Here’s where it gets tricky.

Yes, you want someone with proper training. Look for:

• Recognized certifications in wellness coaching
• Maybe some background in nutrition, psychology, or fitness
• Ongoing education (the good ones never stop learning)
• Professional memberships or affiliations

BUT – and this is a big but – don’t get so caught up in the alphabet soup after their name that you miss the most important thing…

## **The Connection Is Everything**

I’m serious about this one.

You could have the most qualified coach in the world. If you don’t click with them? If you feel judged? If they make you feel like crap about where you’re starting from?

Run. Just run.

The right coach makes you feel:
– Heard (like, REALLY heard)
– Supported, not shamed
– Excited about possibilities
– Safe to be honest about your struggles

## **They Should Have a Clear Process**

This isn’t woo-woo stuff where they just tell you to “manifest wellness” or whatever.

A solid coach has:

• A structured approach (even if it’s flexible)
• Ways to track your progress
• Clear communication about what to expect
• Regular check-ins and accountability

Ask them straight up: “What’s your process? How do we work together?” If they can’t give you a clear answer… next.

## **Red Flags to Watch Out For**

Okay, let me save you some heartache here.

Avoid coaches who:

– Promise overnight transformations
– Push expensive supplements or products HARD
– Make you feel bad about yourself
– Don’t listen – they just talk AT you
– Have a “my way or the highway” attitude
– Can’t provide any client testimonials or references

## **The Money Talk**

Let’s be real – good coaching isn’t cheap. But it shouldn’t bankrupt you either.

What to look for:
• Transparent pricing
• Clear terms about what’s included
• Options that fit different budgets
• Value that matches the investment

And please, PLEASE don’t fall for the “sign up RIGHT NOW for this special price” pressure tactics. A good coach gives you time to think.

## **They Get YOUR Life**

Here’s something people don’t talk about enough…

Your coach needs to understand YOUR actual life. Not some fantasy version where you have 2 hours a day for meditation and meal prep.

If you’re juggling work, kids, aging parents, whatever – they need to get that. They should be asking about your real life and creating plans that actually work within it.

## **Trust Your Gut**

I know this sounds simple but I’m gonna say it anyway.

After talking with them, how do you FEEL?

Excited? Hopeful? Like someone finally gets it?

Or…

Drained? Overwhelmed? Like you’re not good enough?

Your gut knows. Listen to it.

## **The Bottom Line**

Finding the right wellness coach is like finding the right therapist or hairdresser. It might take a few tries. That’s okay.

What you’re looking for is someone who:
– Has the knowledge AND the heart
– Makes you feel capable, not broken
– Meets you where you are
– Has a track record of helping real people get real results

Don’t settle. Your wellness journey is too important.

And remember – the fact that you’re even looking for a coach? That already says something awesome about you. You’re ready to invest in yourself. You’re ready for change.

Now go find someone worthy of being part of your journey.

You’ve got this.
